  • Senior Labour Councillor and former Cabinet Member, Steve Mumby, said it would be Criminal not move 3 week bin collections, even suggesting the Labour Council could move to out 4 weekly collections.
  • Liverpool Lib Dems condemn the comments as ludicrous and out of touch
  • “This is complete madness, we will oppose any moves by Labour start 3 week bin collections,” says Lib Dem Leader

Liverpool Liberal Democrats have released footage of a senior Labour Councillor asking for a move to 3 weekly collections. The Labour Councillor said that it would be “criminal not to”.

In a councillors' meeting on waste-management, Cllr Steve Munby suggested a move over to 3 week bin collections and went even further by raising the possibility of collections being once every 4 weeks. Cllr Munby has been a councillor since 1998 and was cabinet member for neighbourhoods, which includes responsibility for bins, from 2010 until 2017.

Cllr Munby’s plan would add a massive burden on Liverpool households and would worsen recycling rates in the city, already the second worst in the UK.

The Lib Dems say this proposal is ‘madness’ and would ‘lead to more littering and fly-tipping as bins wait even longer for collection.’

The Liverpool Liberal Democrats have opposed any move to three week collections. They said a Lib Dem Council wouldn’t even consider 3 week collections.

Cllr Carl Cashman, Leader of the Liverpool Liberal Democrats, said:

“What’s really ‘criminal’ is a Labour councillor who’s voted for council tax rises again and again, turning around and trying to cut a core council service. 3 Week bin collections would mean rubbish left for rats and other pests and immense strain on households in the city - we already have an issue with rubbish, littering and fly-tipping. How much worse will it be with people waiting an extra week for their bins to be collected?

“If Labour introduced three week bin collections, they would put us on the fast track to ending up like Birmingham! Labour could risk our streets becoming a public tip.

“This is just another example of a Labour Council that doesn’t listen to residents and their concerns. A Lib Dem run council would listen to residents, work hard for residents, and care about residents.”

Stop Labour's plan to cut bin collections to once every 3 weeks!

I/We the undersigned oppose any changes that would see bin collections in Liverpool to once every 3 weeks and instead fortnightly collections should be retained.
