Residents shock after Labour’s secret 25% tax hike

Green Bin Tax

Hundreds of residents across Liverpool will have been shocked to that the Green Waste Bin charge has gone up by 25%.

With countless missed collection and delays at stickers being sent out, residents are left wondering why they have to pay even more for a part-time service that doesn’t work properly to begin with. Since the outset of the Charge the Liverpool Liberal Democrats have been campaigning against it and called on Liverpool City Council to scrap the charge but theirs and residents’ pleas have fallen deaf on the Labour Administration.

The controversial charge was brought in in 2023 and cost residents £40 a year for 20 collections through out the year. At February’s Cabinet meeting, they considered the Revenue and Capital Financial Monitoring Report and including the updated fees and charges for the 2024-2025. Most charges increased in line with inflation around 5% to 10% but all Green Waste collections were jacked up by shocking 25% leaving some household paying just under £190 for the collections across the year.

One West Derby resident, Kayleigh Halpin said, “It’s appalling that the Council have raised the green bin charge so much this year. Given how shoddy the service has been last year, I struggle to see how they can justify such a huge increase. Now if you can’t afford the charge and you don’t have car – what are you meant to do with your garden waste? Either let it rot or don’t bother to look after your garden. If they keep increasing by the same percentage each year, it will be nearly £100 for just one bin.”

Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Carl Cashman said, “This is really poor from Labour to burry a 25% tax hike in the last appendix of cabinet report on financial strategy – why hasn’t this gone in front of the Neighbourhoods Committee or the Finance Committee? It seems as though Labour think they can just jack the prices way above inflation and everyone with just lump it.”
