Liverpool A&E waits of over 110 hours recorded in 2025

A Freedom of Information request by the Liberal Democrats reveals the shocking crisis in our NHS, with the average hospital trust now seeing nearly 3,000 patients wait more than 24 hours in A&E each year.

University Hospital of Liverpool recorded agonisingly long waiting times in A&E, with the longest wait for a patient taking over 110 hours last year. In twelve months alone, over 11,148 patients waited over 24 hours in the University Hospital of Liverpool A&E. 

Liverpool Lib Dems have been sounding the alarm about the city’s hospitals and health services buckling under years of Conservative cuts and Labour Government inaction. They have repeatedly called for urgent action to cut GP wait times and end the corridor care crisis. 

The Liberal Democrats have set out a £1.5bn plan to end corridor care and 12-hour waits within a year. Under their plans, 6,000 more beds would be made available through investment in social care, supporting carers and hospices and boosting step-down care so that thousands more people can leave hospital each week. The party would also secure 8,000 extra GPs so that every patient can be seen within a week or 24 hours if urgent, so fewer people turn to A&E in desperation.

Commenting, Leader of the Liverpool Lib Dems, Cllr Carl Cashman said: 

“Patients across Liverpool are waiting agonisingly long hours in A&E for the care they need. It’s completely disgraceful, and this Labour Government should hang their heads in shame.

"The Conservatives ran our NHS into the ground, and this Labour government has allowed the crisis to get even worse. Enough is enough. Liverpool deserves better.

“The crisis in our NHS cannot be ignored any longer, it is putting patients at risk. Liberal Democrats have a proper plan to end the corridor care crisis, and we want to see an urgent change in the law so the Labour Government can be held accountable if they continue to let long A&E waits spiral."
