Liverpool Liberal Democrats have re-elected Church ward councillor, Carl Cashman, as their leader for the next two years. This means that Cllr Cashman will take the Liberal Democrats into the next set of Liverpool City Council Elections in 2027. He’s also announced his top team to develop Lib Dem policy and holding Labour to account.
Cllr Cashman’s Shadow Cabinet includes his two deputy leaders, Cllr Rob McAllister-Bell, with the ‘A Business Friendly City’ portfolio, and Cllr Liz Makinson, with the “Health and Social Care” brief. Cllr Andrew Makinson is holding the administration to account in his role as Shadow Cabinet member for “Finance and Council Honesty”. Cllr Laurence Sidorzcuk holds the “Culture and Major Events” portfolio.
Now back on the council, Cllr Josie Mullen is heading up the “Environment and Neighbourhoods” brief. Bringing their decades of professional experience on and off the council Cllr Mike Storey holds the “Education and Skills” portfolio and Cllr Richard Kemp returns to the Lib Dem Group after his year as Lord Mayor as the Shadow Cabinet member for “Housing and Tackling Homelessness”
Cllr Carl Cashman said:
“I’m grateful to my colleagues in the Liberal Democrat group for putting their trust in me to lead them into the next set of local elections. The Liberal Democrats will be standing in every seat across Liverpool putting forward our plan for our city.
“Our politics has changed very quickly. After the General Election last July, Labour were riding high and won a massive majority, and what do they have to show for it? Complete annihilation at this year's local election from the Liberal Democrats and Reform.
“Labour aren’t delivering for the people in Liverpool. Nationally, they’re letting our pensioners go cold in winter, letting more of our children live in poverty, and letting down disabled people by cutting benefits they rely on to live. Locally, they don’t listen to the concerns and worries of residents - increasing Council Tax and delivering worse services.
Former Leader of Liverpool City Council, Cllr Lord Mike Storey said:
“The recent local election results have shown us that Labour is vulnerable even in some of their safest areas. Voters are turning their backs on them.
“Only the Lib Dems will take the fight to Labour and Reform. They don’t care about our communities - if they did they’d be out talking to residents and working hard for them. For Liberal Democrats, it’s community first, it's Liverpool first - that’s how we are as ward councillors and that’s how we will run the City. Listening to residents, taking action on their concerns, and delivering results for them.
“In 2027 - voting Liberal Democrat will be a vote for a council that listens, that works, and that cares about you, your city and your community.”
