Ivy Cottage

Urge Council to Reclaim Ivy Cottage and Kelvin Grove Homes

The community of Toxteth, Liverpool, has long been familiar with the cherished structures of Ivy Cottage at 46 Kelvin Grove and the home at 42 Kelvin Grove. These homes reflect the character and history unique to our area. However, changes in ownership have sparked concern among residents. As a member of this community, I have first-hand seen how the privatization and neglect of these properties can impact our neighbourhood's vitality and charm.

These properties were given to PlaceFirst along with the derelict Welsh Streets house to be restored. Despite their claims of commitment to the area, these houses have been left to rot and are now being auctioned off to the highest bidder and will most likely still continue to remain unfinished.

Toxteth is a place filled with history and diversity, a neighbourhood that thrives on community bonds and cultural richness. Allowing significant properties like Ivy Cottage and the home on Kelvin Grove to remain in private hands risks eroding the community fabric we have carefully nurtured over the years. Ownership by the council not only preserves these heritage pieces but allows them to become assets that benefit everyone.

It’s essential for the Liverpool City Council to intervene by purchasing back these properties. By doing so, the council can ensure these buildings are maintained, potentially transforming them into affordable housing. This action would demonstrate a commitment to preserving Toxteth's unique identity and ensuring that the area continues to belong to its people, not just private investors.

Local government investment in these properties would create opportunities for community development and strengthen our neighbourhood. According to local property statistics, areas with greater public ownership tend to have more vibrant local economies and stronger social ties.
