Liverpool Liberal Democrat’s are calling on the City Council to fund the Epstein theatre until a financial solution is agreed.

‘The recent appalling decision by Labour run Liverpool City Council to pull the funding from the Epstein theatre is penny-pinching at its worst’ says Lib Dem spokesperson Cllr Laurence Sidorczuk.

Like most theatres in Liverpool, the Epstein relied on public subsidy to make ends meet and, given its history as a well-loved performance venue with an established popular and varied programme, it is so important to keep it operating.

This decision has created a huge public backlash against the impending closure which the Labour Council are going to have to try and justify. That won't be easy when they have potentially sent their Councillors down to London for a glitzy LGC award ceremony all at the publics expense.

The Lib Dems are awaiting confirmation on the costs of the trip and if this was paid for by the Council. We are calling for an immediate halt to the closure of the Epstein theatre.
