We Liberal Democrats are rightly proud of the quality of our policies. When we next have the chance to govern, we will once more do a great deal of good for this country.
But unless we do more to catch the public’s attention, we simply won’t have that chance. We need to develop simple, bold, Liberal policies that make people stop in their tracks, and pay attention.
To do it, the Liberal Democrats need to become a party of ideas once more: but it will only happen if members like you make it happen. There is no saviour who will do it for us.
This simple policy brainstorm event will challenge you to work together to develop those ideas. You will brainstorm problems that matter to people in Britain today, then you’ll come up with bold solutions to those problems that will grab people’s attention.
Attendees will also have the chance to join Your Liberal Britain’s Online Policy Development forum, and to enter the brand new Ashdown Prize for Radical Thought (Details TBA shortly).
This is an informal event, with no right or wrong ideas or answers. We just want to give you the chance to discuss policy and shape the Liberal Democrats for the future.
After a short introduction and icebreaker, attendees will be asked to vote with their feet to sit at a table with others under a national policy area they have interest in.
The policy areas are:
Economy and Business
Health and Social Care
Education and young people
Families and communities
Constitutional and Political Reform
On each policy table will be a sheet of A3 paper. People on the table will be asked to brainstorm problems within their policy area that ordinary people already care about. (Not the things Lib Dems want them to care about: the things that already matter to them.) For example, a Health group might list long waiting times as a problem that people care about. This will last about 15 minutes before groups feed back to the room.
Then the respective groups will be asked to pick one of the ten problems to address and then brainstorm ten attention grabbing solutions to the problem that they can explain in six words or fewer. Groups will then be asked to think about the most attention grabbing solution that is in line with Liberal Democrat values.
Finally a ‘what’s next’ presentation will be given to encourage the groups or individuals to advance their attention-grabbing policy by the way of a motion to Liberal Democrat federal conference and how to win the Ashdown prize for radical thought.
