No child should go hungry

Liberal Democrats Children’s Services Spokesperson in Liverpool, Cllr Liz Makinson, has welcomed the decision by Liverpool Council to provide free school meals for approximately 20,000 children in Liverpool next week.

Cllr Liz Makinson says, “The Liberal Democrats fought in Parliament yesterday to ensure that no child would go hungry.  Sadly, the government do not think this basic human right is important and so today we support Mayor Anderson in providing children in Liverpool with food over the half term.  The pandemic means changes for everyone’s lives but it should never mean children go without a meal.

This move will cost hard-pressed Council taxpayers about £250,000 but unlike Tory MPs, who we suspect would like to see children cleaning chimneys, we are sure that all the people of Liverpool will join with us in welcoming this expenditure.

We also welcome the fact that Liverpool Parish Church and Everton and Liverpool Football Clubs are also going to run food schemes next week.

Liverpool Liberal Democrat councillors Kris Brown, Malcolm Kelly, Barbara Mace and Mirna Juarez have also reached an agreement with Strawberry Field and are funding hundreds of kids lunch packs for local people to have for free during the half term.

We must now get together to ensure that children are properly fed over the Christmas holidays as well. If this is to happen, we need to start taking the necessary steps now.”
