Labour Mayoral Candidate Announcement - our reaction

The Leader of Liverpool’s Lib Dem opposition, Cllr Richard Kemp, has reacted to the news that his Labour opponent is Cllr Joanne Anderson by saying that, “the Labour Party is treating the people of Liverpool with absolute contempt. Cllr Anderson has just 2 years’ experience as a back-bench member of the Council. She has conceded that she has twice been a bankrupt. This will hardly inspire confidence in a council where up to £100 million has been squandered by her Party.

Labour now want this inexperienced individual to lead a council that is, by common consent the worst in England.

So, I challenge Cllr Anderson to do two things:

Firstly, apologise for all the scandals and corruption that the Labour Party have caused to the City which have been evidenced by this report; and

Secondly, to debate with me as her main opponent what Liverpool needs to do next in terms of

i) Restructuring the political and managerial operations within the Council

ii) Promoting policies which will take Liverpool into a new post-Brexit and post-Covid world; and

iii) Restoring the good name of Liverpool to its residents, businesses and potential investors”

Cllr Kemp has emailed Cllr Anderson but has yet to receive a reply.

Cllr Kemp has called upon organisations within the City but especially the media to hold virtual hustings and events to question leading candidates. The three issues that I have been raising with Cllr Anderson are ones that she and I need to discuss in front of the electorate. The people of Liverpool need to be able to judge for themselves who has the experience and knowledge to take this dire council forward”.
