| Cash machines should be available in poorer areas say Lib Dems |

ATMs that don't charge a fee are getting rarer and rarer in some parts of Liverpool. Yet these are often just the areas in which having to pay a fee to withdraw small amount of cash just makes people's poverty worse.
Now South Liverpool Lib Dems are calling for action to make sure that people don't live in ATM deserts. And it looks as if national banking organisations are now willing to do their bit to help out. Lib Dem Councillor, Paula Keaveney, who represents Speke and Garston, has been working with two national organisations to see if free cash machines can be located in parts of the area which currently go without. Paula says: "Banks are more willing to help out now. This follows enquirires into the subject at which people from Speke have explained how difficult it is to get cash when you don't have a car and can't afford to pay a fee. I have been talking to representatives from two national organisations, both of which are interested in finding new locations." The topic of free ATMs is being debated at a meeting of Liverpool City Council tonight (Wednesday 6th September). Cllrs Paula Keaveney, Danny Hughes and Richard Oglethorpe have written a motion which also asks council officers to help find good sites.
