From schools to cemeteries, traffic lights to treadmills - Liverpool's Liberal Democrat council is running on green energy!
Liverpool City Council now uses green electricity to power every school, council building, library and street light in the city. Energy bosses at the council have struck a deal with utility giant ScottishPower Manweb, to supply renewable energy to the council. It means that only environmentally friendly electricity from solar, wind and hydro-power is supplied to every city council service. Executive member for green issues, Lib Dem Councillor Richard Oglethorpe, said: "As a city council we are always talking about how important it is to be environmentally aware, so we need to set the right example. "Everything connected to the city council is powered by green energy - from our schools and Town Hall, right through to out leisure centres and street lights. "We are proud that we are only one of a few authorities in the country to have 100 per cent green energy." Liverpool City Council aims to encourage residents across the city to use renewable energy in their own homes, especially as this can be achieved at no extra cost.
