Big swing to the Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrats are celebrating after their best General Election result in 60 years.

While locally, they made real progress by slashing Labour Majorities.

In Wavertree, Lib Dem candidate Colin Eldridge managed a 12% swing, cut Labour's majority down to 5000 from over 12000.

Lib Dems now needs only a 7% swing to win the seat.

Colin said, "In 1997 Labour had a majority of 20,000 and now that has been cut to 5000. It shows Labour can’t afford to take local people for granted anymore, and we have a real chance of winning next time!"

In Garston, Paula Keaveney achieved a 9% swing, cutting Labour's majority to 7,000.

While in the once safe Labour seat of Riverside, Richard Marbrow managed an 11% swing, slashing Labour's majority from 20,000 down to 10,000.

Kiron Reid in Walton and Pat Moloney in West Derby also increased their share of the vote.

Riverside Lib Dem candidate Richard Marbrow said, "What May 5th has done is turn Liverpool into a key battleground city for next time."

"This year was the appertiser for the main meal at the next election - and we want to be feasting on Labour MPs."
