LEADER’S COMMENT ON THE QUEEN’S SPEECH TODAY

In response to the Queen’s speech today, Liverpool City Council Leader Warren Bradley said:

“In a time when trust in politics and in politicians is so low, I was really disappointed with the content of the Queen’s speech today.

“There was nothing of substance that would give the people of Liverpool the help and jobs they need in this recession and it won’t help to clean up politics.

“Amongst Labour's proposed reforms is the Improving Schools & Safeguarding bill - the twelfth education bill in as many years under Labour. Instead of taking action to cut class sizes and reform the unfair funding, this Bill will further centralise our schools system, place even more bureaucracy on headteachers and does nothing to actually raise standards.

“After 12 long years, this Labour Government has passed nearly 500 different laws, along with countless thousands of statutory instruments – almost as many fruitless inquiries that Councillor Anderson has called for!

“Instead of creating more bureaucracy and centralisation, give power and funding back to local people. Today’s speech, written by the Labour Government, proved that Labour has run out of ideas for our country.”
