Dozens of extra street crime wardens will hit Liverpool's streets thanks to Liverpool's Lib Dem run Council
Funding for street wardens will increase from £100,000 per year at the moment, to £500,000 next year and a massive £1 million in each of the two years after. The cash injection will mean a huge increase in the number of wardens, who have operational links to the police and are able to tackle street crime and anti-social behaviour. Kensington and Fairfield Ward Liberal Democrat Councillor, Richard Marbrow, who is also the Council's executive member for community safety, said: " These proposals show we are getting tough on crime, anti-social behaviour and yob culture by putting more people on the street to deal with it. " The new wardens will be highly visible and will work closely with the police. This will be a great reassurance to anyone who is concerned about crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood." There are currently two types of street wardens operating in Liverpool. One group deals with street crime and is based only in the city centre and Kensington. They look at CCTV, conduct surveillance and provide assistance to crime victims. The other group works as neighbourhood caretakers, assisting residents by dealing with problems. The new proposals mean the number of more powerful street crime wardens will increase from its current level of 14, and they will be spread right across the city under the control of the city council. The existing neighbourhood wardens will be maintained, but they will be managed by registered social landlords and co-operatives, with help from the council's neighbourhood managers.
