Liverpool One - Grosvenor's £1billion development in the heart of Liverpool City Centre - has been gathering major regeneration awards. It won the Mixed-use Project of the Year and the Best Use of Planning in Regeneration categories in the Regeneration and Renewal Awards. And it is the overall winner of the Royal Town Planning Institute North West and White Young Green Planning Achievement Awards for 2008 as well as the Award for Best Urban Regeneration Project. Liverpool One covers 42 acres , features four retail districts, 30 individually designed buildings, 1.4 million sq ft of retail space, a multiplex cinema, 230,000 square feet of restaurants, cafés and bars, together with more than 600 new apartments, two hotels, offices, a revitalised five acre park, and new public transport interchange. Judges in the Regeneration and Renewal Award said; "The council and developer retained the city centre's streets as they were rather than impose a shopping mall over the city's grid system. They created real, living city centre shopping streets." And the RTPI Judges were equally impressed. They said: "Planning input was both early and thorough, with the result that there were few objections. Particularly pleasing is the clear continuity of the site with the early history of Liverpool and its maritime tradition." Lib Dem Cllr Peter Millea, Executive Member for Assets and Development, said; "We knew that Liverpool One would be something special and it is gratifying that it is being recognised nationally. It is also very pleasing that the planning aspect of the development - and the way the council and developer worked together - has been honoured."
