Liberal Democrats are fighting to scrap the Council Tax and replace it with a fairer local income tax
The national Liberal Democrat Campaign to abolish Council Tax is being spearheaded in Liverpool by Wavertree Parliamentary Spokesman Colin Eldridge . " Council Tax is an unfair tax," says Colin. " People on low incomes, especially pensioners, pay proportionally more than wealthier people. The only fair way to tax people is on their ability to pay, and that means a local income tax." " It is also very expensive to collect and to administer Council Tax benefits," adds Colin, " paying it all throught the national income tax system will cut out lots of delays and bureaucracy leaving money available for vital services." The campaign is backed by a range of organisations throughout the country, especially those representing pensioners who often live in large houses thus causing big tax charges but have small incomes because they are relying on reducing pensions. The Government has agreed to look at this suggestion as part of a wide range review of how local government is financed.
