Local Labour MPs back Post Office closures

Labour MP’s across Liverpool have voted to close another 2,500 Post offices, despite appearing to campaign against the closures locally. SEVEN more local Post Offices will close in Liverpool against the wishes of local residents.

Cllr Colin Eldridge said, “Our Labour MPs should be ashamed. Once again they do exactly what Gordon Brown tells them to do. They should be standing up for Liverpool instead.”

“When our Labour MPs are in Liverpool they say they oppose post office closures. But when it really matters in Parliament they vote to close post offices. No wonder politicians get a bad name.”

Liberal Democrats locally and nationally are campaigning to stop the cuts.

Over 50,000 people have signed the Lib Dem petition against the closures. Last month Liverpool Liberal Democrat campaigners presented the petition to Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street.

Cllr Elaine Allen said, “I believe that Post Offices are vital to our local community. When a post office closes it hits other businesses too.”

“Often it’s the most vulnerable people who suffer most because they can’t get to another post office. We will continue to fight alongside local people to stop Labour’s post office closures.”

Labour’s current round of 2500 closures are ON TOP of 7500 post office already closed by Labour and Conservative Governments.

Unlike the other parties, the Lib Dems have a plan to protect and improve Britain’s post office network.

Cllr Colin Eldridge added, “For over twenty years Labour and Conservatives have been running down our post office network. It’s time for a change.”

“I want to see real investment in our post office network so we get better services for the thousands of local people who use post offices every week.”
