| Watch out - the dog fouling team's about |
|
Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police are joining forces to crackdown on dog owners who don't clean up after their pets. The team, who will also be joined by members of the environmental charity Encams, are set to hit the streets of Kensington, Everton, Picton, Kirkdale and Riverside and will hand out a £50 fine to anyone who doesn't dispose of their dog's mess effectively. Kensington & Fairfield Lib Dem Councillor Frank Doran, said: "Dog dirt on our streets is unacceptable and this team is dedicated to clamping down on irresponsible dog owners. "Anyone caught not cleaning up will be given a fine, and if they refuse to pay it, we will prosecute them and they could end up paying out nearly £3,000. "Picking up after your pet couldn't be easier and there isn't any excuse not to do it. It's a good way or re-using plastic bags and they can be put in the nearest litter bin. "It's all about respecting your community and your city - and the minority of people who leave our streets in a mess need to clean up their act, or they will be fined." After the first operation, the team will target the areas at different times over the forthcoming weeks and will be on hand to give out pooper scooper bags. Last year 112 fixed penalty notices were issued, and three people were taken to court. Every year, 4,000 staff hours are used cleaning up dog mess and approximately £140,000 is spent cleaning it up.
