| 85 GP Surgeries face axe |
Liverpool Health chiefs have revealed they plan to have just one surgery per 20,000 people. Health chiefs in Liverpool say they have done research proving that people want their doctors surgery to be open in the evening and at weekends. Yet they have failed to reveal whether people are also willing to travel long distances when they are ill. The scheme is just part of Labour’s reorganisation of he health service, which this financial year has seen thousands of redundancies and operations cancelled to save cash. Many elderly people and parents are expected to oppose the idea, which could mean patients travelling long distances to visit a doctor. Patients' groups have warned that scrapping local family doctors could lead to a poorer service. Colin Eldridge, Wavertree's Lib Dem parliamentary spokesperson, is leading a campaign to save local surgeries. Colin said “People should be able to see their family Doctor near to where they live.” Many areas could be without a local GP surgery under Labour's plans Many people believe the health service should be non-party political. Yet in Liverpool a reorganisation of the Primary Care Trust, the body set up to run things like GP services, saw every Lib Dem Councillor removed. The organisation is now chaired by a former leader of the local Labour party, and is joined by other current, or former members. The Liberal Democrats in Liverpool believe that everyone has the right to access good quality health services. Liberal Democrats say that larger surgeries will be no use if people without transport can’t get there. “We are determined to stop these plans to create a two-tier health service in our City,” says Colin.
