First view of new olympic pool

Work is well underway on the new £15 million  Olympic pool in Wavertree, and will open in 2007.

This stunning image shows how Liverpool's £15 million new Olympic size swimming pool will look when completed.

Work is well underway on the new facility at Lifestyles Picton in Wavertree, and is expected to be completed next November in time for European Capital of Culture 2008.

The majority of funding - £11 million - is coming from the City Council, with a further £4 million from the National Lottery through Sport England.

Lib Dem Council leader Warren Bradley said: "The pool will be a valuable facility, not just for our up and coming junior swimmers who are potential medal winners of the future - perhaps at the 2012 Games in London, but also the local community.

"The pool will allow us to bid for major swimming championships so that local people can cheer on our athletes in their home city."

It includes a 20 metre/four lane community pool and 400 seat spectator arena, and replaces the worn out 80 year old Picton pool, which has been converted into a One Stop Shop.

Picton Lib Dem Councillor Ian Jobling added, "Not so long ago Labour was trying to convince residents the new pool would never be built and they even had the cheek to blame the Lib Dems when the Government held up the lottery funding so they could spend more on the London Olympic bid. Now they can swallow their words - all 100,000 gallons worth!"
